What can I tell you about this apple pie? It’s hands down one of the most delicious I’ve ever tasted. Just like in those childhood cartoons, it instantly reminds you of Granny’s classic homemade pie.

The American Apple Pie, also known simply as American Pie, is a timeless dessert made with apples. It’s not hard to make, but there are a few tricks to get it just right. This pie features a homemade, egg-free crust that stays crispy and crumbly, with two layers of pastry encasing a cinnamon-spiced apple filling cooked with butter, lemon, and sugar.

Ingredients for American Apple Pie

For the Crust:

  • 450g (3 ½ cups) all-purpose flour
  • 200g (¾ cup + 2 tbsp) cold butter, cubed
  • 100ml (⅓ cup + 1 tbsp) ice-cold water
  • 1 pinch of salt

For the Apple Filling:

  • 600g (4 cups) apples (peeled and cored)
  • 1 lemon (zest and juice)
  • Ground cinnamon (to taste)
  • 100g (½ cup) sugar
  • 30g (2 tbsp) butter

For Brushing:

  • 1 egg yolk
  • Granulated sugar

How to Make American Apple Pie

  1. Start by making the crust. Mix the flour, salt, and cold butter in a bowl until crumbly.
  2. Add the ice-cold water and knead until the dough comes together. Wrap it in plastic wrap and chill in the fridge for 30 minutes.
  3. Prepare the filling: Peel and dice the apples. Cook them in a pan with lemon juice, cinnamon, sugar, and butter for about 15 minutes until soft but still slightly firm. Let it cool.
  4. Roll out the chilled dough. Place the larger piece into a greased pie dish and press it into the edges.
  5. Fill the crust with the apple mixture, mounding it slightly in the center.
  6. Cover with the second piece of dough, trim the excess, and seal the edges. Cut small slits in the top to let steam escape.
  7. Brush the top with egg yolk and sprinkle with granulated sugar.
  8. Bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for about 45 minutes, or until golden brown.
  9. Let the pie cool before slicing and serving.

Enjoy!
