Grandma’s orange bread is a cupboard cake perfect for the whole family’s breakfast, now in my house it is made every 2 days, it ends quickly!
What is so special about orange bread? It is a fragrant dessert that emanates a scent throughout the house, perfect for the whole family and good to eat for breakfast and snack. A typical Sicilian dessert, my grandmother used to make it often, the recipe is from a Sicilian friend of hers and I am sharing it today.
Ingredients (Serves 6)
- 3 eggs
- 200g (1 cup) granulated sugar
- 200g (1 2/3 cups) all-purpose flour
- 100g (3/4 cup) potato starch
- 380-400g (13-14 oz) organic oranges, unwaxed
- 100ml (1/3 cup + 1 tbsp) milk
- 100ml (1/3 cup + 1 tbsp) sunflower oil
- 1 packet (16g or 4 tsp) baking powder
- Powdered sugar (icing sugar), for dusting
How to make Grandma’s Orange Bread:
- For the preparation of this cake we start by washing the oranges well, let’s cut them into small pieces, remove the seeds and then put in a blender, we have to blend until we get a puree, we keep aside.
- We go on to work the eggs with the sugar in a bowl, we use electric whips, we whip until the mixture is smooth, frothy and clear. We add both the flour and sifted potato starch by spoonfuls, pour in the milk and continue working. We add the oil and continue to process, then add the orange puree.
- Finally we add the baking powder for cakes and only when the dough is ready we can transfer it into a mold with a diameter of 24 cm and let it bake in a preheated oven at 180°C (355°F) for about 40-45 minutes, we turn off when it is cooked, but only after doing the toothpick test, click here not to miss.
- When the baking is done, we turn off the oven and let the cake cool well before removing it from the mold. Then we place on a serving plate and sprinkle powdered sugar and serve in slices.
